Including internal links in content has been highlighted as good use of search engine optimisation (SEO) by an industry expert.

According to Sam Tilston, online marketing director of vitabits.co.uk, doing this in strategies is effective, although the reputation of a brand is also key.

Referring to the BBC’s recent decision to optimise its headlines – meaning that they will become longer and incorporate more keywords – Mr Tilston observed that Google believes reputation to be a considerable factor in search.

"Using basic SEO techniques on a website with a good reputation will only enhance that website’s search engine performance," he said.

The BBC’s internet marketing services professionals will be doing this in order to continue as an online leader, instead of having to play catch up, Mr Tilston added.

Recent research by Econsultancy and Guava indicated that the broadcasting service’s decision to increase their SEO campaigns appears to be part of a wider acceptance that the method is beneficial.

The study revealed that 48 per cent of respondents reported increased return on investment from SEO in the last 12 months.
